Winter adds a new set of chores that are done on our farm. Since all of our electric power is obtained through our solar panels, we must keep them clear of snow to collect the light. This picture is of Kathy as she rakes down the small amount of snow with her homemade, long-handled scraper.
We now have a greenhouse on the southwest overhang of the barn just in time for the cold winter weather. It was made with removable panels of clear polycarbonate sheets so when the cold winds turn warm again we can take them down and store them until next winter.
It is very important for the alpacas to get as much sunlight as possible during the dark winter months. Kathy keeps a path open with the snowblower around one of the fields and we encourage the animals to go out by bringing fresh hay up into the pasture. |
